ABOUT THE ARTIST
MY VIEW

We live in a beautiful country where we are free to travel and observe nature yet many of us go through our lives and never really look at what we have. As an artist I attempt to bring attention to ordinary things by putting them in a painting in a sometimes-different view. By using color and the spontaneous effects of water media I try to capture my experience with that subject.

Color affects our mood and moods affect our choice of colors. When creating a painting I seem to choose colors that match my mood or feeling about the subject I am painting. If I am in a rather melancholy mood the painting will reflect that either by the quiet shapes chosen or by the calm colors, such as blues and greens. On a sunny day when all is well my lines and colors will be more playful oranges, yellows, and reds, somehow more energetic.

I seem to need constant change when doing my artwork. I prefer to do 2 or 3 watercolor pieces on paper in a more traditional manner, and then switch to a more abstracted piece either on paper or canvas. I use acrylic paints as well as w/c pencils and pastels on some or all of my work …if the painting “needs” it I will use whatever method works to capture the mood or feeling I felt about the subject.

Joy comes from the act of painting. The process is challenging with continuous decisions making that produces---hopefully, a pleasing result. With each piece from the beginning with an idea to the end with a finished painting; the real pleasure of being totally involved in the process makes it all worthwhile.

As you view my paintings I hope you experience more than the subject matter that you are able to see it in a new way and feel the joy I felt while creating each piece. As Georgia O”Keefe said “ I found I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn't say in any other way - things that I had no words for”.
